I attended a defensive driving course conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It is a 2 days course consisting of pure lecture on the 1st day and a practical course on the 2nd day.
This course is mandatory for MLNG staff who drives in the plant area just like me.The management enforced this regulation to minimize the number of traffic accidents in the plant.
Second day practical course was held at the Old Bintulu airport. There were 3 assessments to it. First assessment was casual driving around town area, adhering to speed limits, proper usage of signal, ability to reverse park properly, etc.
Second assessment, we had to navigate the 2 tonne pickup truck around the cones forward and reverse without knocking them over. It proved quite a challenge for those who never driven one before. Lucky for me, i navigate my way home on the 1st try:P
Final assessment was the braking test. It basically is a quarter mile drag on 1st, 2nd gear all the way to 60km/hr and then slamming the brakes down hard. There were a lot of burning rubber during this last run.
I hope that the skills that i've acquired from this course would be put to good use when required too.
